PhD Students

Dr Konstantina Pringouri
2019    New derivatives of benzothiadiazines and their coordination chemistry
I undertook my BSc at the University of Patras, followed by a Masters with Prof. Christou at the University of Florida. I received a prestigious Trillium Scholarship to work in the Rawson group where I learned a lot about organic synthesis, NMR and X-ray diffraction as well as exploiting my previous knowledge of coordination chemistry! After completing my PhD I returned to Greece where I am currently working for Uni-Pharma S.A. in their R'n'D department.

Dr Aisha Alsaleh
2018     Synthesis and characterisation of free-radical bearing nanoparticles
After completing my undergraduate degree, I moved to Windsor and studied for a Masters with Prof. Ricardo Aroca on SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) at the University of Windsor before moving on to a PhD in the Rawson group preparing and characterizing radical-coated nanoparticles, funded through a Saudi government scholarship. I gained expertise in nanoparticle characterization using solution measurements and microscopy (AFM, SEM) techniques as well as investigating radical-radical interactions through EPR spectroscopy. I have currently returned to Saudi Arabia.

Dr Yassine Beldjoudi
2016     Synthesis, structures and photonic properties of dithiadiazolyl radicals
I undertook my undergraduate studies in France and first joined the Rawson group as a visiting scholar from the Universite Paris V while on an International Masters program. I really enjoyed the opportunity and was grateful for the opportunity to return for a PhD working on dithiadiazolyl radicals and their magnetic properties. I gained expertise not oly in air-sensitive synthesis but also hands-on expertise in X-ray diffraction (single crystal and powder) as well as EPR, UV/vis absorption and emission spectra. While in the Rawson group I had the opportunity to visit the Universidad Zaragoza where I learned about SQUID magnetic measurements and data processing. After completing my thesis I turned down a prestigious Japanese JSPS Scholarship in order to work with Nobel laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart at Northwestern University in the USA.

Dr Thao Tran
2014    Synthesis and characterization of heavy p-block heterocycles
I came to Canada from Vietnam where I did a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. My PhD focused on the design and synthesis of heavy p-block molecules particularly focussing on dithiaphosphole (C2S2P) and diazaphosphole (C2N2P) rings. After completing my PhD I have taken time to raise a family.

Visiting PhD Students

Amira Elkhair (University of Khartoum, Sudan)
2015     Received a fully-funded travel scholarship to complete work on her doctoral thesis on the synthesis and
            reactivity of iminophosphoranes.

Dr Lewis Wilkins (Melen Group, University of Cardiff, UK)
2015     Received training in (a) single crystal X-ray diffraction from crystal selection and mounting through data
collection, solutoin and refinement and (b) the basics of computational chemistry (DFT). Currently a PDF
with F. Gabbai at Texas A&M.

Dr Asato Mizuno (Awaga Group, University of Nagoya, Japan)
2013     Received training in the synthesis and characterization of thiazyl radicals. After completing his doctoral
thesis Asato received a Humboldt Fellowship and is currently working at KIT (Karlsruhe) in Germany with
            M. Ruben.
